Levels A1–A2
By Georgina Palencia.
If you are learning Spanish and spend time in the car—on your way to work, to class, or running errands—that time can become a valuable space for real immersion. Listening to Spanish regularly helps train your ear, expand vocabulary, and become familiar with the rhythm of the language, even if you don’t understand everything yet.
At Spanish Society, we always recommend that—even at beginner levels (A1–A2)—your contact with the language be directly in Spanish, without translating through English and without turning every moment into a formal lesson.
Below, you’ll find what type of audio works best and six concrete podcast recommendations:
- 3 created by native speakers for native speakers, with clear topics and an accessible pace
- 3 designed specifically for learners of Spanish as a second language
What to Listen to and What to Avoid (Very Important for A1–A2)
✅ What we recommend
- Audio directly in Spanish, even if you don’t understand 100%.
- Programs with clear and predictable topics: general culture, history, economics, personal growth.
- Voices with clear pronunciation and a moderate pace.
- Episodes between 10 and 30 minutes.
🚫 What to avoid
- Audio that explains Spanish in English.
- Long grammar lessons while driving.
- Live radio: it usually has a faster pace, interruptions, ads, and a high-energy style that speeds up speech and makes comprehension harder for beginners.
- ❌ Vocabulary lists (“today’s words,” “20 verbs,” etc.):
- They lack context.
- They don’t train real listening skills.
- They may help memorization, but not comprehension while driving.
In the car, you need language in use, not isolated words.

How to Listen So It Really Helps
While driving:
- Don’t translate in your head
- Don’t pause constantly
- Listen the way you listen to music: let unfamiliar words pass
Over time:
- You’ll recognize more words in class
- You’ll understand more without effort
- Your ear will become more flexible and confident
In Summary
For A1–A2 levels, the car is not the place to memorize vocabulary or study grammar rules.
It is the perfect place to listen to real, clear Spanish with meaning.
At Spanish Society, we believe that learning a language is also about living in it—even while driving.
